In September 2000, the Cumberland Empowerment Zone Corporation (CEZC), along with the County of Cumberland and the Delaware River Bay Authority (DRBA), provided assistance for the opening of the Academy of Aviation Science at Millville Airport, with the goal of developing the Airport to its most efficient use. As part of that ongoing effort, in early 2001, Manders Merighi Portadin Farrell Architects, LLC (then MMA), was contracted by the DRBA to provide design and engineering services for a new Multi-Use Multi-tenant spec aircraft maintenance hangar. The goal of the project was to encourage companies in the aviation industry to locate at Millville Airport.
Designed to accommodate two Gulfstream V corporate jets, the completed 40,000 SF facility includes 1400 SF of office, shop and repair spaces; and 22,000 SF of hangar bay space with a 178’ clear opening. Unique to the project was the installation of a state-of-the-art foam deluge fire protection system, and the design and engineering of a separate fire protection pump house. The pump house was designed to serve the new hangar, and existing hangar and future hangars.
UPDATE April 9, 2010: In February, Boeing reached a deal with the DRBA to lease two hangars at Millville Municipal Airport to perform modification work on CH-47F Chinook helicopters.
